Artist Info

Sarah Tietje-Mietz

My work is heavily influenced by landscapes, cityscapes and architecture, and the intrigue created when this world in front of us changes as night falls; shapes and structures warp and expand, shadows lengthen, lines blurs, friendly faces become strangers, and light takes on an ethereal quality. I attempt to capture these moments in my work; when the everyday moves into the almost-magical, and you have been caught in something both familiar and separate.

I earned my BFA in studio art from the Art Institute of Boston (now part of Lesley University), where I focused on traditional forms of printmaking and painting. My work has always been inspired by nature, landscapes and architecture, and I experimented with photography to create and build upon my work. I then went on to receive my Master of Science in Historic Preservation at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), during which time my projects were focused mainly on New York State history and architecture.

My work has been shown at Stone Quarry Hill Art Park, The Gear Factory, and on The Cazenovia Art Trail.

My work in and around historic structures further inspired me artistically, and I continue to work in painting and photography, reflecting this influence. During my time in Chicago, I received a scholarship to work in the Anchor Graphics printmaking studio at Columbia College, where I was able to delve back into my love of the etching and intaglio process, which I hope to return to again some day.

I am currently working towards my Masters in Arts Journalism, at the Newhouse School at Syracuse University, and received the Distinguished Goldring Scholarship for this program. I work as the Assistant Director at the Stone Quarry Hill Art Park, in Cazenovia, New York, a site rife with stunning vistas, historic structures and the natural world that is ever changing and ever inspiring.
